Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich Preview – Prediction & Potential line-ups

European football returns this week as Paris Saint-Germain welcome Bayern Munich to the Parc des Princes in the first-leg of the last 16 tie. 

This will be one of the first Champions League fixtures before other teams also take the field to compete in the prestigious tournament. 

The Parisians suffered a shocking 2-1 loss to Marseille in the Coupe de France last week. They were looking to bounce back on Saturday in the Ligue 1 but succumbed to another disappointing defeat at Monaco. 

Christophe Galtier’s men conceded three goals in the first-half and failed to make a comeback after the interval to lose 3-1 at the Stade Louis-II. However, despite their recent struggles, PSG are still sitting five points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table. 

Bayern Munich, on the other hand, will enter the upcoming clash on the back of an encouraging 3-0 win against VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga. 

Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry all earned their names on the scoresheet as the Bavarians registered their 12th victory of the season.  

Julian Nagelsmann’s side endured a disappointing run of form after the mid-season break, suffering three consecutive draws in the top-flight. 

However, things are now looking good for the German giants as they have picked up back-to-back wins against VfL Wolfsburg and VfL Bochum. 

Bayern are currently top of the league standings but Union Berlin are just a point behind them in second. 

Match Preview 

Paris Saint-Germain 

PSG have been trying to win the Champions League since the takeover by Qatari Sports Investment in 2011. The closest they came to lifting the coveted trophy was in 2020. They reached the final of the European Cup but ultimately lost the important match to Bayern Munich, with Kingsley Coman’s second-half goal proving to be the deciding factor. 

The 2020-21 campaign saw them losing the semifinal to Manchester City on 4-1 aggregate, while last season, the Parisians lost the round of 16 tie to Real Madrid on 3-2 aggregate. 

PSG will be hoping to claim their first European Cup this season but they face one of the toughest opponents in Bayern. The two European heavyweights have met each other on 11 occasions in the past, with the Parisians winning six and losing five of their matches. 

Bayern Munich 

Bayern Munich have won six European Cups so far, with their most recent one coming in 2020. 

The Bavarians are one of the favourites to win the Champions League this year. They were excellent in the group stages as they won all their six matches to top Group C, which featured the likes of Inter Milan and Barcelona.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich Prediction 

Paris Saint-Germain will have home advantage but they will be missing their key player in Kylian Mbappe. Lionel Messi’s availability is also doubtful at the moment. Meanwhile, Bayern will also be missing several players, including Sadio Mane, Noussair Mazraoui and Lucas Hernandez in latest Bundesliga news. 

But recent form suggests the Bavarians will prevail on Tuesday.
